The smile of the dolphins and the songs of the whales are 20.000.000 years old! For over four thousands years they have enriched the Greek civilization, among others through myths and legends, but also in the art and science.
The Greek Seas present an unexpected wealth of marine life. However,
nobody was aware of the wealth in cetaceans until the scientific work
of the Pelagos Institute brought it at surface. Nobody knew that the most
important population unit of sperm whales in the Mediterranean permanently
inhabits the Greek Seas. It was the Pelagos Institute that discovered
the sperm whales in Crete and later the Ionian Sea, published its discoveries
in scientific journals and broadcasted the news across the media.
