For the first time in Greece, all available records regarding cetaceans
in the Greek Seas since
1840, have been elaborated and entered in a database. These data have
been collected from dedicated surveys, stranding events, opportunistic
sightings and published or unpublished photographic and video documents,
during the last decade (1991-2000). The database accounts for almost 1000
entries of scientifically confirmed sightings and strandings of ten cetacean
species. The project is a collaboration of Pelagos Cetacean Research Institute
with the National Centre for Marine Research (NCMR). The results were
presented in the 15th Conference of the ECS (European Cetacean Society),
in May 2001 in Rome and were also published in 1993 by the Hellenic Centre
for Marine Research in a dedicated scientific
monography.
